Roger Black (MBE) is a retired British athlete. He now works as a television presenter and motivational speaker. Roger is respected and admired throughout sport for his marvellous achievements. He took up athletics quite late, having played Rugby semi professionally.

He won four major Gold medals before his 21st birthday and then missed all of 1988 and 1989 due to a serious injury. In 1990 Roger made a remarkable come-back to win the European 400m title, making history by becoming Britain's first 400m runner to retain two European Gold medals.

In 1991 Roger developed his standing as one of the world's best 400m runners by gaining Silver in the World Championships in Tokyo and breaking the 45-second record eleven times to win the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona. Also in 1991 Roger was awarded the MBE and an Honorary Degree from Southampton University.

Roger was also a key member of the 4 x 4 relay team, which dramatically beat the Americans for the world title. In 1992 despite running 44.72, he was beset with injury problems and in 1993 was cruelly struck down with glandular fever. He was again forced to miss another season. After a very careful rehabilitation programme, he returned to world-class form in 1994, narrowly missing his third European title. His best time of 44.78 nonetheless ranked amongst the top six 400m runners in the world.

Thoughtful, intelligent, and articulate, Roger is keenly aware of his responsibilities to his sport. Having fought back from a crippling injury that kept him from competing for two and a half years, he is often seen as an inspiration to others.

Roger has had a column in The Times, and has appeared on TV and Radio on various chat programmes. He has also worked for BBC TV Sport as a sports presenter and captained A Question of Sport for a brief period. Roger's charisma and style make him an extremely marketable personality. As a result in July 1992 he launched a very successful fan club.

Roger has worked regularly for the BBC on programmes such as Tomorrow's World and Grandstand. In 2004 he was one of the celebrities that took part in the pro-am dancing contest Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One. In September 2006, he took part in BBC One's Celebrity Masterchef programme, reaching the final along with Matt Dawson and Hardeep Singh Kohli.

As a premier BBC Sports Presenter, Roger has established himself as a key member of the team. Broadcasts include The Black Run, Athletics Focus (live), the award winning Sydney Olympic broadcasts (live), World Championships in Edmonton (live).

Utilising his extensive BBC presenting skills, Roger is frequently asked to link and facilitate entire conferences.
