Sir John joined Cadbury Limited in 1968. Over the years he has worked on both the confectionery and soft drinks sides of the business, on the boards of Cadbury Ireland, Cadbury Schweppes South Africa, as a founding director of the Coca-Cola Schweppes UK joint venture in 1987, and then as Managing Director of Trebor Bassett.
In 1993 he became Managing Director of the Confectionery Stream and a member of the Cadbury Schweppes Board. In September 1996 he was appointed Chief Executive.
He is a Non-Executive Director of The Rank Group Plc and of Barclays Plc; a Director of the Financial Reporting Council; an Advisory Board Member of CVC Capital Partners and of Ian Jones and Partners, and a Leadership Council Member of Young Enterprise.
Sir John is also a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacture and Commerce; a Fellow of the Institute of Grocery Distribution and a Companion of the Chartered Institute of Management.
He was President of the UK Food and Drink Federation from 2002 to 2004, and President of ISBA, the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers from 2002 to2005. He served as a Task Force Member on Accounting For People and on the Tomorrow's Company Inquiry into Wealth Creation.
Sir John is Deputy President of The Thirty Club, having previously been President in 2004 to 2005. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for Arts and was knighted in the Queen's birthday honours list 2006, for services to business.
