Chris accumulated innumerable national titles before bursting onto the scene in 1992 when he won Gold at the Barcelona Olympics in the 4000m pursuit. This achievement turned him into a household name almost overnight. He also snatched the world record from his great rival, Scotland's Graeme Obree to stamp his name firmly in the world of professional cycling.
In 1994, Chris took on cycling's greatest challenge - the Tour de France, and in the same year in impressive style he took three titles at Cycling's World Championships. At the Atlanta Olympics, Chris took Bronze in the Individual Time Trial event. That year also saw him win the prestigious Grand Prix de Nations event, as well as regain the Hour Record in spectacular style at Manchester.
Now retired, Chris works as a journalist for the country's biggest Diving Magazine (Chris's other passion) DIVER, he manages to stay in touch with his former colleagues through his work with the Tour de France. He also provides a consult service to a number of sporting organisations and speaks at a limited number of functions each year.
Chris is a former member of the English Sports Council, vice president of the North West Sports Aid Foundation, the North West ministerial advisor for sport and Patron of a local children's charity 'Claire House'.
