Charley Boorman is a British actor, adventurer and Travel Writer.
Although Charley started out as an actor (he played Jon Voight's son in Deliverance, directed by his father John Boorman), he is perhaps best known for his motorcycle adventures with fellow actor and good friend, Ewan McGregor.
In 2005, Charley and Ewan set off on their motorcycles for a 20,000-mile round the world trip. Their travels were documented in the television series, and later, book, Long Way Round. The story of their journey follows the two as they encounter gun-toting Ukrainians, Mongolian Nomads, exhaustion, injury, unpredictable weather and turbulent politics. Long Way Round is a fascinating, frank and highly entertaining travel book about two friends riding round the world together and, against all the odds, realising their dream.
Following on from Long Way Round, Charley took part in the Paris-Dakar race, arguably the most demanding motorcycle race in the world. Beginning in Lisbon and ending in the Senegalese capital of Dakar, the rally covers 15,000 kilometres of treacherous terrain, and is widely regarded as the most dangerous race on earth. With his teammates Simon Pavey and Matt Hall, Charley faced extreme temperatures, rode through shifting sands and stinging winds, and faced breakdowns miles from civilisation. This extraordinary adventure through Portugal, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Senegal was filmed to create the television series, Race to Dakar.
Having caught the travel adventure bug, Charley set out on yet another journey with friend and fellow traveler, Ewan McGregor. After an inspirational UNICEF visit to Africa, they knew they had to go back and experience this extraordinary continent in more depth. And so they set off on a 15,000-mile journey with two new BMWs loaded up for the trip. Joining up with producer/directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian and the Long Way Round team, their route took them from John O'Groats at the northernmost tip of Scotland to Cape Agulhas on the southernmost tip of South Africa. Riding through spectacular scenery, often in extreme temperatures, Ewan and Charley faced their hardest challenges yet. With their trademark humour and honesty they tell their story in Long Way Down. The show aired on BBC2 in 2007.
